Communications from a device that can be monitored by other devices to uniquely identify the device for a period of time. This flow is typically achieved by passively monitoring lower-layer protocols (e.g., Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pings). Field device signatures can be monitored by mobile devices to support geolocation. Mobile device signatures can be monitored by field devices to monitor system performance (e.g., measure travel times between field device locations).
