Physical Object: Multi-Access Edge Computing
MEC Intersection Management
Overview
'MEC Intersection Management' uses cellular communications to support connected vehicle applications that manage signalized intersections. It communicates with nearby vehicles and ITS infrastructure (e.g., the traffic signal controller) to enhance traffic signal operations. There may be constraints related to performance related to communications with participants using network operators foreign to the MEC.
This functional object is included in the "Multi-Access Edge Computing" physical object.
This functional object is included in the following service packages:
- CF06: Freight Signal Priority
- MC11: Maintenance and Construction Signal Priority
- PS03: Emergency Vehicle Preemption
- PT09: Transit Signal Priority
- TM04: Connected Vehicle Traffic Signal System
- VS12: Vulnerable Road User Safety
This functional object is mapped to the following Functional View PSpecs:
- 1.1.1.6: Collect Vehicle Roadside Safety Data
- 1.1.2.6: Process Collected Vehicle Safety Data
- 1.1.6: Collect Vehicle Traffic Surveillance Data
- 1.2.7.3.1: Process In-vehicle Signage Data

Requirements
| # | Requirement |
|---|---|
| 01 | The field element shall communicate with passing vehicles to provide the current signal phase and timing information for all lanes and approaches at a signalized intersection. |
| 02 | The field element shall collect current signal phase and timing data from the traffic signal controller. |
| 03 | The field element shall determine when special vehicles requesting preemption or priority at a signal are authorized to do so based on their digital credentials. |
| 04 | The field element shall send the infrastructure application status to the operations center. |
| 05 | The field element shall receive signal priority/preemption requests from vehicles. |
| 06 | The field element shall collect current signal phase and timing data from the traffic signal controller. |
| 07 | The field element shall forward authorized signal priority/preemption requests to the traffic signal controller. |
